Winter Training Camp – France 2019

At the start of January, we went away for our annual training camp on the Lac d’Aiguebelette in Savoie, France. It was a thoroughly enjoyable week of rowing including mixed eights, separate senior and novice eights, as well as some time in small boats and the quad. We were fortunate enough to be able to row every day and ended the week with some light-hearted racing. The novices made some vast improvements under the coaching of Kate Hurst and Alasdair Docwra. Besides rowing, we had a good dose of snowball fights, an expedition to the forest above Les Tilleuls near Le Col du Banchet, a meal in Chambéry, games and study time. To cap off a successful week, everyone jumped into the freezing lake on the last day – a great end to another great camp. As a result, we have had a fantastic number of novices continuing into Lent term and look forward to seeing them put into practice the training they received on camp!

Captains’ Summary – Michaelmas 2018

Senior Women

Following a summer of graduations and, for some, the entry into the final year of their PhD, the women’s side lost quite a few members. As such, we trained for the most part in a IV with a few additional women committing to some of the training. Given that IVs are harder to row in than VIIIs, we have benefited a lot from our training this term. We also introduced a weekday lunchtime water session where we made the most of an empty river with no queues in sight. It was a great bonus to have continuous rowing time and we enjoyed using these sessions to go out in the newly-named quad, the Finch. Read more “Captains’ Summary – Michaelmas 2018” →

Fairbairns 2018

An impressive total of ten Christ’s crews raced in Fairbairns this year, with three senior boats, three novice boats and four alumni boats. Senior VIIIs raced the 4.3 km from Jesus Boathouse to just downstream of the A14 bridge. W1 raced as a IV over the 3.4 km course, finishing at the Plough pub. Due to very high wind speeds, the novice race was shortened to finish at the P&E (former location of the Pike and Eel pub), totalling 1.8 km.
